This weekend is Pierogi Fest in Whiting. While I'll be getting my fill of Polish food on Saturday, today I headed to La Palma to get my bi-monthly steak burrito fix. The last time I went to a supermercado for a burrito I got a mouthful of mediocre steak and wilted, near slimy lettuce. This visit I hoped for vindication and fresh ingredients.

My desire for fresh lettuce, tomato, onion, and cilantro was satisfied upon arriving at the counter and seeing tubs of freshly chopped vegetables (Supermercado Ortega please take note). Beans, cheese, and sour cream were also added to the steak burrito. The steak, aside from containing 3 pieces of gristle and in need of more seasoning, was good. The red and green salsas were both very good and would have been enjoyed with complimentary chips if I hadn't got my order to go.

La Palma's steak burrito is very good overall due to excellent, fresh veggies and salsas. Had the steak been better, this burrito would be in my top 5 or so for flavor. Regardless, La Palma is worth checking out.

Taco Delight is a carry-out only restaurant that has been in business since 1962. In addition to Mexican food, they also offer gyros, fried shrimp, and breaded lake perch. Unfortunately, they offer burritos as well.

Weighing almost two pounds, my mushy, hard-to-handle “steak” burrito contained mostly beans and a chili-like sauce that was taken from a plastic container in the refrigerator. This mixture was either left over “Bistec Ranchero” which is steak meat cooked in ranchero sauce or “Carne con Chili”. I found the meat to be more of a fatty, low grade roast than steak. In addition to the meat and beans the burrito also contained lettuce, cheddar cheese, and large tomato wedges along with some poblano peppers from the “meat mix”. The hot sauce was thin, runny, and lacking flavor. Chips and salsa are available for an extra charge.

For an establishment that has been in business for as long as Taco Delight has been, I was thoroughly dissappointed in the quality and value of the burrito. It is possible that their other offerings would fare much better. After all, their name isn’t “Burrito Delight.”
