The Burrito Shop is a fairly new addition to the Valparaiso quick/casual dining scene having opened sometime in mid to late 2009. Not a true taqueria, this restaurant is similar in style to a Chipotle or Moe’s only without the Subway-style assembly line although it has a more varied menu. In addition to burritos, the restaurant features appetizers, salads, and dinners such as stuffed taco dinners and Pollo Loco (grilled chicken and chorizo with cheese sauce and tortillas.)

Burrito options include the “Cattlemen Burrito” which features grilled steak, peppers, and onions, the “BBQ Texas Chicken Burrito” featuring Wagner’s BBQ sauce, as well as a “Buffalo Chicken Burrito”, “Cajun Chicken Burrito”, “Chorizo Burrito” with mashed potatoes (sounds mushy), and a bean and veggie burrito. I opted for the “Loco Burrito” with steak (of course), beans, cheddar and monterey jack cheese, lettuce, tomato, onions, and sour cream. The steak was excellent and contained no fat or gristle. I found the burrito to be light on cheese and greasy/runny at the end. No other ingredients stood out or were of note.

No salsa or hot sauce was given even though I sampled some tortilla chips in my to-go order. The chips were a mix of corn and flour tortillas and were on the greasy side (particularly the flour chips.)

The Burrito Shop delivers a quality steak burrito at a fairly steep price. If you’re a little more budget minded, I suggest El Amigo’s Valpo location with its great food and superior chips.
